Appreciating Diversity Film Series 
The Appreciating Diversity Film Series is a collaborative program of the Piedmont Appreciating Diversity Committee, Piedmont Adult School, DiversityWorks, and the League of Women Voters. We endeavor to show six documentary films a year, each followed by some form of community dialogue.

Although these films are free of charge, please register to reserve your seat.

This is a documentary film made by Almudena Carracedo and Robert Bahar. It follows the remarkable story of three Latina immigrants working in L.A. garment sweatshops as they embark on a three-year odyssey to win basic labor protections from a mega-trendy clothing retailer. In intimate verite style, this film reveals the impact of the struggle on each woman’s life as they are gradually transformed by the experience.

Basic Wilderness First Aid

Learn how to protect yourself and others from wilderness hazards and do first aid outdoors. We use vivid slides, interactive lectures, and creative skills practice to make the class lively and effective. We also teach you to improvise with whatever is on hand. Steve Donelan is the chairman of the ASHI wilderness program, and author of the textbook. He has been designing and teaching wilderness emergency care courses for 20 years. He also trains instructors for ASHI and is section editor on education for Wilderness & Environmental Medicine, and has published dozens of articles in national journals. Certification by the American Safety & Health Institute (ASHI); sponsored by the Sierra Club Activities Committee.

Mature Driver Improvement / Staff

Mature drivers 55 and over: you may qualify for a reduced auto insurance premium by completing a mature driver’s course. This is an eight-hour class that will cover traffic laws in California and discuss defensive driving techniques that will help you compensate for mistakes of other drivers and deficiencies caused by aging. Contact your insurance agent to see if you qualify for an insurance discount. The certificate is good for three years. You must be a California licensed driver. (School ID # M0 269)

The Piedmont Adult School is DMV-licensed to hold Traffic Violator Classes for those needing to fulfill their obligation with the courts. With permission from the court, this class will cancel your traffic ticket. Traffic classes are held in the evening during the week on Mondays and Tuesdays, or Tuesdays and Wednesdays, from 6:00-10:00p at Piedmont High School in Room 16. The cost is $40 and includes your certificate. Space is limited. Contact the Piedmont Adult School at 594-2657 for schedules, or 594-2718 to speak with a representative.
